Island "Stein"

The section of the Park housing the stone island "Stein", the Grotto of Egeria, and the poplar avenue is supposed to leave an impression of an Italian scenery. Rock Island Stein with Villa Hamilton In the years between 1788 and 1796, a building cladded with enormous quantities of erratic boulders was erected and named "Stein". The construction as a whole is formed of rock passes, grottos, the Temple of Night, the Temple of Day, Columbarium, Amphitheatre, Villa Hamilton, et alia. All together the complex respresents the Prince's and his builder's reminiscence of their stay at the Gulf of Naples and in Sicily. The Villa Hamilton is based on the residence of the English ambassador at the Court of the King of Naples, who had been the Prince's host there. As a special work of art, a replication of Mount Vesuvius towers above this complete example of architecture.

After extensive, long lasting restoration works, the island was reopened with a marvellous event at the beginning of September of 2005, where a volcanic eruption was staged as the successful end of the celebration.
Today the whole island "Stein", comprising the Villa Hamilton, can be visited again.
