»Wörlitz is neither a regional nor a German attraction; it is a European, a world issue...«

Dessau-Rosslau
(11.2 miles from Wörlitz)

The former town of residence of the land of Anhalt has a variety of attractions to offer to its visitors. With the establishment of the Bauhaus, an art and architecture school in Germany, in 1926, Dessau became the capital of modernity. Today Walter Gropius's famous Bauhaus building and the close Masters' Houses (Schlemmer/Muche, Kardinsky/Klee, Feininger) belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. The Bauhaus can be visited daily; the Masters' Houses are open from Tuesdays to Sundays. Masters' Houses

In contrast to these attractions, the castles and parks, as a part of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz (also on the UNESCO World Heritage List), invite you to take beautiful walks. The small and intimate site Luisium with the little restored Classical castle was dedicated to Luise of Anhalt-Dessau by her husband, Prince Franz. Prince Johann Georg, Prince Franz's brother, had the impressive Georgium Palace and Park built. Today the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie, an association supporting the paintings gallery of Saxony-Anhalt, has its seat in this Palace.

The Landscape Garden of Großkühnau is the youngest part of the Garden Kingdom, begun by the son and ended by Prince Franz's grandson. Mosigkau with its Palace and Park is considered to be one of the last Rococo ensembles of Middle Germany that have been preserved for the most part. It was yet established at the time of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau, who became known as the »Alte Dessauer«.

It is also interesting to trace the famous sons of the town, as there are Kurt Weill, Hugo Junkers, Moses Mendelssohn, or Wilhelm Müller. In addition to this, Dessau awaits its guests with a comprehensive offer of sports and leisure facilities.
